Blogger Bash, anyone?

So, it's time to plan another blogger bash!

Please post whatever days & times work for you in comments here. I am pulling for a weekend so we can pull out all the stops. It's been said that conservatives come early & leave early, while liberals come late & stay late. Well, now let's try a non-partisan party: Let's all come early and leave late this time! Here are the only guidelines:

  1. If you blog, you are invited: wherever you blog---livejournal, Xanga, blogspot, or indie blogger---you're encouraged to come join the community. Even if you're on hiatus. (Yes, even you, Len! Especially you.)
  2. You don't have to tell us who you really are. Blog aliases will do, just tell us where you blog. No showing up, saying you have a secret blog, any of that crap. Seriously, dude, it's not that big a deal. Because:
  3. If you choose to use your actual identity with us, we promise not to reveal your true name to non-bloggers.

I think that is all. You can also email locations, dates, other parameters to me at .::serrabee at gmail dot com:. Keep in mind that many of us can't really throw down on weekdays because we have kids and/or real jobs, most of us live in & around Midtown, and some of us don't smoke.

I have talked about the value of building actual relationships before, but I think it's worth noting again that even if you believe that the internet has expanded our opportunities by bringing us new ways to communicate with each other, you understand that not only are there unique perils associated with it, there's a whole new set of barriers specific to electronic communication. So knock down the walls of the local blogosphere and join us!

You know, while I'm on the subject, I must note that the anonymity of a blogger cannot possibly be undervalued. Once the people reading your writing know you, they begin to critique, correct, ridicule, and judge you out loud. This is done in an attempt to poke you back into your leetle performing-circus-bear box whenver you write something they disagree with, find offensive, think is snarky or narcissistic, etc.

If I didn't love this d@mn blog so much, I'd abandon ship for unchartered waters. Maybe I will anyway. But first, let's have another party so we can all talk to those people we missed last time.

I've never been much of the bar scene guy, so I'll leave the location to those wiser than I. As far as when, if it's before August 17 then I can work around anything (I'm loving this newfound, sadly temporary, semi-unemployment.) After August 17th, let's do it on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. I'd rather not be hung over going into Civil Procedure on Monday. Hung over going to Sunday School on the other hand is just a friendly test of faith from the Almight.

Just as long as you mean non-partisan by attendance. I'm such a dork that if you get me anywhere near Autoegocrat, Leftwing Cracker, or Freedonian, in real life or online, politics just spews forth. At least with thepeskyfly, I can always have stimulating conversations about drag queens too. If it has to be nonpartisan, I might have to be limited to that. I guess that's okay. It's a quite inexhaustable subject matter.

Thanks for the shout out, but Len's not on hiatus. Len's retired, permanently. He's enjoying the non-blogging life too much ever to consider coming back.

(For these purposes, I don't think that my rare baseball posts at The Birdwatch count. Especially since they're so rare as to be nonexistent since February.)

David:
Just come & try to chat about 1 non-political thing with someone other than another political blogger, that's all I'm askin!
Len:
Your attendance is still expected.
Wintermute:
Of course Drinking Liberally is not at a non-smoking venue; I never said it was.
I just think that some places may be suggested which don't have a no-smoking area, like P&H again or others that are even smaller.
Remember us former smokers, is all I ask!

Shoulda seen me a couple of weeks ago. The communion wine reactivated the river of Guinness I had downed the night before, and I found myself fairly drunk at mass. Some friends asked me to join them for coffee afterward, and I thought "Coffee... Yeah... Good idea."

Now, on to more important things...

Serrabee, I would love to. I'm fairly flexible on the when and where as long as I have a few days' notice.

I always love opportunities like this. I really enjoy meeting writers whose work I enjoy, such as yourself.

Count me in.

Anywhere, anytime is good for me! I'm there. Thanks for taking up the banner. :-)

So that's why the Baptists I know all do the crackers and grape juice thing for communion.

What David said. If you don't want me talking politics, then put tape over my mouth.

:LOOK:
By non-partisan, I only meant:
Let's all come early and leave late.
You can feel free to talk about whatever you want; I'm not the conversation Nazi!!
Sheesh.

David Holt said...

Have a drink, sweet serrabee. Didn't think you were the conversation nazi, just giving you a hard time. On the other hand, a coversation nazi would be kind of fun. Rather python-esque... (And THANK YOU for the nonsmoking area idea!!!)

Memphis Chix said...

Well, I'm not bringing duct tape, handcuffs, or riding crop to the bash, and that's final.
But I will talk drag queens and politics with y'all.

Jon Carroll said...

David, i would never test you in such a way. My new covenant with the world states that in Section 5, Sub-Section 3, paragraph 3, that I can't test people like I did that human crash test dummy Job.

No riding crop? Damn...

Historically, I never do what's expected of me.

:-)

I will keep an eye out (here, Cracker's and Pesky's are the three Memphis blogs I read fairly regularly) and put the date in my calendar. If I'm not otherwise committed and if I'm feeling social, I'll appear. That is a decision which I will make at time(t - N) of the day in question, where t = "Bash start time" and N = "travel time to the Bash venue".

That's all the commitment I can make. Don't be surprised to see me; don't be surprised not to.

I will be there assuming you don't put it on a Saturday in the middle of football season. As far as I'm concerned, any day is going to be good for me.

And can we have two seating sections? One for the people who want to argue about politics all damn night and another section for people who want to be social and cool.

Also, you might want to give everyone two dates to choose from. Just put up a message a week or two before the two dates.

Memphis Chix said...

Yeah, I'm now planning on polling people with a choice of 3 times and locations at least 2-3 weeks ahead since we've had such a dearth of suggestions. :-D

early is better - if there's a show, I'll have to bail.

Rachelandthecity said...

oh, and I could always get the Hiotne to open early on Sunday night - like 7Pm -before I dj at around 9:30 - we'll have the place to ourselves and our own bartender - just a thought.

Memphis Chix said...

That would be fun, and I like the idea of a Sun. night, myself. Do you really go on at 9:30? cause that wouldn't leave us much time to actually hear one another.

Sarah said...

Count me in. Sunday night would work great for me. I need some motivation to pick up where I left of on my non-political blog.

theogeo said...

Sunday is good. A venue that serves liquor/wine in addition to beer would be great (because I'm either a total wuss or an alcoholic — guess correctly and win a prize*).

*Not really

Memphis Chix said...

I love Bosco's, too, but I doubt it has enough room for us. There were... I dunno, 16 or 18 people last time? We'd have to pay about $250 for the private room (which is also nonsmoking, I think).

Sorry to shoot you down! What do you think about the Young Ave. Deli? That is, if they're not having a band which might kick us out?

Contrary to the rumors, we're not really going to segregate by blog topic or political persuasion. Intentionally, anyway.

David Holt said...

Young Ave. Deli sounds good to me.

Rachelandthecity said...

No one gets to the Hitone until 11 or after - plus I have full control of the tunes and the volume...

people can bring tunes and we can take turns dj'ing - plus if you do it on a Sunday evening and it's somewhere else - I won't be able to come!!

if everyone has fun, we could make it a bi-weekly thing...

Good point: I'll put up a poll asap to see if Sun. works for the most people.
